In addition, I think it’s unfair to compare the Occupy movement’s solidarity to Durkheim’s conception of mechanical solidarity. One of the key elements in the Occupy movement is the consensus process, which would actually be contrary to the collective authority and repressive sanctions that typify a society based on mechanical solidarity.

I don’t even see such a strong connection between the two. Durkheim was describing capitalism from mechanical to organic. when it comes to occupy I think it’s more related to a Marxist type scenario than Durkheim.
